VBtech is proud to announce that equipment from our partners, integrated with VBtech’s fine-grain OTN (fgOTN) processor IP subsystems, has successfully passed two major optical networking equipment tests in China.
The first test was organized and led by China Unicom (CUCC) from Winter 2025 through Spring 2026. The second test was organized by China Mobile (CMCC) in Spring 2026. Successful participation in both test programs demonstrates the maturity, reliability, and interoperability of VBtech’s fgOTN technology in multi-vendor optical networking environments.
Demonstrating the Benefits of Fine-Grain OTN
These tests are an important evaluation of the benefits of fine-grain OTN, which enables efficient transport and aggregation of hundreds to thousands of channels, with channel rates ranging from 10 Mbps to multiple Gbps, over long-distance optical fiber networks.
The test programs also evaluated interoperability among equipment from multiple network equipment vendors and test equipment vendors. VBtech’s fgOTN processor IP subsystems demonstrated excellent performance, reliability, and interoperability, including successful interoperation with Huawei equipment supporting fgOTN.
This multi-vendor interoperability is an important step toward broader deployment of fine-grain OTN technology in next-generation optical transport networks.
VBtech Realgar: An fgOTN Processor IP Subsystem for Cost-Optimized Designs
The fine-grain OTN standard was publicly released in March 2024. VBtech subsequently achieved general availability of its fgOTN processor IP subsystem in May 2025.
Developed under the codename Realgar, VBtech’s fgOTN processor IP subsystem is designed for integration into cost-optimized FPGA and ASIC implementations. It natively supports throughput options from 5G, 10G, 20G, and 40G, enabling equipment manufacturers to select an appropriate implementation according to system requirements and optimize overall BOM costs.
Realgar also supports SAR (Segmentation and Re-Assembly) for backplane connectivity, as well as a high-bandwidth, non-blocking Cross Connect supporting fgODUflex and ODUj/k, ODUflex, and protection applications. All fgOTN overhead processing is handled within the IP subsystems, simplifying system-level implementation.
In addition to the processor IP, VBtech provides SDK and API support to help equipment manufacturers accelerate software development and reduce time to market.
